Agriculture & Organic Gardening

A vocational education program exploring growing organic food, self-sufficiency, and agricultural practices that are sustainable for both farmer and land.

An agrarian lifestyle is the foundation of self-sufficiency; the ability to produce food is a primary key to sustainability. Agriculture & Organic Gardening interns will learn about:

  • Land management and conservation through permaculture techniques
  • Bio-dynamic & bio-intensive farming
  • Applied bio-diversity
  • Extended growing seasons using greenhouses & shade cloth
  • Pollinator habitats
  • Aquaponic & aquaculture systems
  • Field crops including cover crops heritage and heirloom varieties of grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables.

Extended Internship: Avalon Organic Gardens

On-campus gardens, greenhouses, aquaponics facilities, and pastures give Extended Interns hands-on experience in seeding, planting, crop care, and harvest. Students work with Master Gardeners and Agricultural Faculty to become involved in all aspects of caring for the land and producing a wide variety of foods from herbs, to fruits, to vegetables.

"I know of no pursuit in which more real and important services can be rendered to any country than by improving its agriculture."
